A Balancing Act: International Women’s Day

By Natasha Mayer

International Women’s Day has been observed since 1911 to celebrate the achievements of women in the social, economic, cultural, and political realms and to call for renewed commitment to improving the status of women worldwide. In 1975, the United Nations formally designated March 8th as International Women’s Day.

The International Women’s Day theme for 2019 is Balance for Better. There are so many ways in which this theme is applied, from working toward a balance between genders in the workplace, balanced representation in media, but what’s on my mind for this year is creating a balance in individual’s women’s lives.

As women, we are constantly asked to walk a tightrope between too ambitious and too complacent, too assertive and too quiet, too focused on career and too focused on family. This International Women’s Day, I want to cut the tightrope. Let women be too loud, too confident, too much themselves.

By opening the door for women to be unapologetically themselves, we can ensure that all women have the opportunity to advance in the corporate world, tell their stories in the entertainment world, and support their families without any negative impact based on their race, economic status, sexuality, or gender.
