Last month Eshel launched the year’s Merchav Batuach trainings at Queens College, with a meeting of Orthodox allies. JWFNY is funding the trainings, which educate primarily Orthodox students on how to become allies to LGBT individuals.
The student-organizers were concerned: would those who signed up forget the commitment they had made? Would those who showed up stay for the entire three hours? The result: twenty students, all campus leaders, showed up, and stayed long after the training. There was excitement in the air! Queens College—a very diverse campus with a large Orthodox student population, including a large number of Sefardic and Bukharian Jews—could become an even more inclusive and welcoming space for its Orthodox LGBT students. Next stop, in December: Barnard and Columbia here we come!
